TREE Fund Update

Applications are due November 1 for the TREE Fund's

Jack Kimmel International Grant Program

and

John Z. Duling Grant Program

Apply online at www.treefund.org/research_grants.htm

The Jack Kimmel International Grant Program honors the late Jack Kimmel, former director of parks for the City of Toronto. Grants are limited to $10,000 per project and support arboriculture and urban forestry research all over the world. The Jack Kimmel International Grant Program is supported by donations to the Tour des Trees riders of Team Canada. To donate visit http://www.active.com/donate/STIHLTourdesTrees10/PGraham67

The John Z. Duling Grant Program was established and funded by a bequest from the estate of John Z. Duling of Indiana, who was a strong advocate of research and proposed in 1972 the establishment of the ISA Research Trust. The goal of the John Z. Duling Grant Program is to provide seed money or partial support for innovative research and technology transfer projects that have the potential of benefiting the everyday work of arborists. Funding is limited to $10,000 per project, and projects are expected to be completed within one to three years.

Tour des Trees rides into TCIA headquarters

On July 24, 2009, 66 Tour des Trees cyclists rode into the parking lot at the Tree Care Industry Association’s headquarters. The cyclists of the STIHL Tour des Trees to benefit the TREE Fund arrived amid heavy rain but not dampened spirits, midway through their weeklong, 500-mile trek through New Jersey, New York and New England to raise awareness for the need for tree research. The 2009 STIHL Tour des Trees ultimately raised more than $440,000 for the TREE Fund.

About the TREE Fund

In 2009, the TREE Fund facilitated a collaboration between Asplundh, Bartlett, Davey and STIHL to provide expert training for participants in the NYC Million Trees training program.  Of the 11 trainees in the arboriculture track, nine were hired b y commercial arboriculture companies.  The TREE Fund also partnered with 20 agencies from Chicago's public and private sectors for the Chicago Trees Initiative.

Established in 2002, the Tree Research & Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund) was a merger between the National Arborist Foundation (NAF) and the International Society of Arboriculture Research Trust which were founded in 1985 and 1976 respectively.  Although the TREE Fund is an independent non-profit organization, it continues to work closely with the Tree Care Industry Association and ISA.

TREE Fund's mission is: to identify and fund projects and programs that advance knowledge in the field of arboriculture and urban forestry to benefit people, trees and the environment.

The 2010 STIHL Tour des Trees will launch from Chicago's spectacular Millennium Park on Sunday, July 18, and travel north and west to the Mississippi before looping back toward the Chicago area. 500 miles later, the Tour concludes Saturday, July 24, at Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL, during the International Tree Climbing Competition's preliminary qualifying events. The $75 registration fee for the “Ride for Research” covers lunch, a t-shirt, entrance to the Morton Arboretum and a donation to the TREE Fund.
