I preach this daily. After 8 years of "busting" fly-by-night tree-hacks I still encounter this horrific practice. Here in Florida, these same "hacks" often perform what they call a "hurricane cut" which is basically "Lion's-tailing". The state of Florida owes it's residents the responsibility of protecting them from UNREGULATED TRADES, and it should begin an official licensing of TREE CARE PROFESSIONALS within this trade! So many people are victimized within this trade by those "fly-by-night-chain-saw-owning-fools" that proport themselves as "professional arborists"!!! We (the government) police the other trades: electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and engineers. We even police (regulate and license) other trades like nursing, hairdressers, and nail techs! So why not ARBORICULTURE?!

Ugh...I'll step down off my soap box now.

Thank you TCIA for this great article!
