Data from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) indicate that both reaching for and dialing a mobile telephone increase the odds of a commercial motor vehicle driver's involvement in a safety-critical event, such as a crash, near crash, or unintended lane departure.
Effective January 3, 2012 this restriction on cell phone use became federal law, and States are obligated to adopt it. Violators can incur large fines, both to themselves and to their employers. CDL license holders run the risk of having their license suspended or revoked.
